Scrub the sides of the tank to remove algae before changing the water. Loosening the layer, allows it to be removed with the water. Have live plants in the tank to reduce the growth of algae.

    • 2

Leave the decorative items and plants while cleaning the tank so as not to disturb the biological filter. Biological filter is a natural mix of microorganisms that is introduced into the tank while cycling during the set up. This natural filter makes the waste excreted by the fishes less toxic.

    • 3

Change 15 percent of water at a time instead of replacing the entire volume at once. Do this once a week to maintain a healthy life system in your tank. Use a siphon to remove and replace the water so the gravel and decorations do not get disturbed.

    • 4

Use a chloramine remover to dechlorinate the water that is to be replaced in the tank. The chemicals found in tap water are usually low for humans but harmful to the natural bacteria maintained in the tank for toxin filtration.

    • 5

Allow a breathing space between the top of the water line and the tank cover. Fish need oxygen circulation at the surface of the water to breathe.

    • 6

Spread gravel evenly at the bottom of the tank. Place smaller gravel in the front, so it is easier to monitor the waste that is collected at the bottom.
