How to Feed a Coral

Corals are a beautiful and fascinating addition to any tank. Corals can be very delicate, and they need special care and attention in order to grow and thrive. What you feed corals and how you do it is an important part of caring for them.

Instructions

    • 1

Remember that corals are animals, not plants. Just like your fish, they need to be fed and they have special food requirements.

    • 2

Research each coral you have in your tank and determine its needs. Make sure you find out what type of food it eats, the size the food needs to be for it to eat it and the amount of food the coral needs.

    • 3

Find out how much food your corals need. Some are fully photosynthetic and don't require feeding. Some can grow without any additional nourishment but will thrive if you feed them. Others must be fed because they have no photosynthetic properties and will starve if not fed.

Take note especially of the way that each coral eats. Some corals draw food in through the water column, so you can release food anywhere in the tank. Others require that the food be put directly on the body of the coral so that they can draw the nourishment in. A third kind of coral needs the food released nearby so that it can consume it when it drifts by in the water.
