How to Choose Lights for a Saltwater Aquarium

Saltwater aquariums need specific lights, and since lighting is one of the most expensive elements of most fish tanks, it's important to do some research before you spend your hard-earned money. Knowing how to choose lights for a saltwater aquarium will make your trip to the fish store more enjoyable and allow you to make the best decisions for your tank.

Instructions

    • 1

Consider what type of fish tank you want to create. The three main types of tanks are fish-only, fish-only with live rock (abbreviated FOWLR) and reef tanks.

    • 2

Use regular fluorescent bulbs in a fish-only tank if you want. These tanks need the least amount of light.

    • 3

Know that FOWLR tanks do best with compact florescent lighting. This helps encourage the growth of coralline algae, which is beneficial for the tank. If you're not concerned with promoting coralline algae growth, you can probably get away with using regular fluorescent bulbs on your FOWLR tank.

Understand that building a reef tank produces the most complicated lighting situation in a saltwater aquarium. Reef tanks need VHO (very high output) or metal halide lighting. A combination of the two is often used.

Realize that one of the biggest problems in a reef tank is the amount of heat the lights generate. A large amount of light is necessary, but too much heat is bad for your corals. Combining halides and VHOs will give you the light you need without cooking your tank.
