How many sharks exist today?

The total number of shark species currently in existence is around 500. These species vary greatly in size, from the smallest, the dwarf lantern shark (Etmopterus perryi), which is only about 6.5 inches long, to the largest, the whale shark (Rhincodon typus), which can grow up to 40 feet in length. Sharks can be found in all five of the world's oceans, from the shallows to the deep sea. They play a vital role in the marine ecosystem as top predators, helping to maintain healthy populations of other fish species.
