Why does betta fish stink?

Betta fish don't inherently "stink." However, there are a few reasons why their tanks might smell:

* Dirty Water: The most common reason for a fishy smell is dirty water. Betta fish produce waste, and if their tank isn't cleaned regularly, the ammonia and other waste products build up, causing a strong, unpleasant odor.

* Overfeeding: Feeding betta fish too much can lead to uneaten food rotting in the tank, contributing to a foul smell.

* Algae: Excess algae growth can decompose and release unpleasant odors.

* Filter Problems: If your filter isn't working properly, it can't effectively remove waste and ammonia, causing a buildup of odor.

* Unclean Decorations: If the decorations in your tank are porous or made of materials that trap food and waste, they can contribute to odor.

To prevent your betta tank from smelling, follow these tips:

* Regular Water Changes: Change a portion of the water weekly, and do a full water change every month.

* Proper Feeding: Feed your betta small amounts of food multiple times a day, only as much as they can eat in a few minutes. Remove uneaten food.

* Maintain a Clean Tank: Clean the tank regularly, removing algae and debris.

* Clean the Filter: Rinse the filter media in old tank water, not tap water, to avoid killing beneficial bacteria.

* Choose the Right Decorations: Opt for smooth, non-porous decorations that are easy to clean.

If you've taken all these steps and your tank still smells, consult a pet store or veterinarian for further advice.
