How to Divide a Betta Tank

Bettas are known for being very aggressive fish that typically cannot be housed with another betta or any other type of fish without problems. A divided betta tank makes it possible to house multiple bettas in separate partitions within a single tank. Dividing a larger tank with these small partitions is a way to provide bettas with the space they need and keep them from harming each other. It also means you still technically maintain a single tank.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width and height of the tank and cut a piece of plastic embroidery canvas to the exact size. Slightly trim the canvas on all sides but do not trim off more than 1/8th an inch.

    • 2

Fit a slide-on plastic binding bar onto each side of the canvas. Depending on the size of your tank you may need to use pieces of additional binding bars to cover the whole sheet.

    • 3

Insert the divider into the middle of the empty tank. The fit must be snug. If there is too much space left between the divider and the wall of the tank your bettas may be able to slip through.

    • 4

Fill the bottom of the tank with gravel or substrate. Pile extra amounts around the base of the divider for support.

    • 5

Fill your tank as usual but keep the water level 2 or 3 inches below the top of the divider so the bettas cannot jump over it.
