What Plants Are Used With Betta Fish?

With more than 50 species, betta are small red or blue fish with a wide fan-like tail. A betta aquarium often includes plants, though some plants are better than others. With any betta tank, it is important to give the fish enough room to swim.
  1. Chinese Evergreen

    • The Chinese Evergreen, or Aglaonema, is a sturdy and carefree plant with little requirements. Also called the "Silver Queen," the Chinese Evergreen is best kept out of direct sunlight and should be planted in the middle of the aquarium. Chinese Evergreens will live for approximately a year.

    Peace Lily

    • The Peace Lily is known for ample roots. The plant thrives best in shallow water, as the stems need to be out of the water. The Peace Lily's lifespan isn't as long as other house or aquarium plants, but it does bloom, which is why many use a Peace Lily vase as a home for bettas, with the root system in the vase serving as the fish's habitat.

    Philodendrons

    • Typically found in river banks or swamps, philodendrons are ornamental plants with heart-shaped leaves that are available as a vine plant or a common house plant. Philodendrons thrive in indirect sunlight and slightly warmer temperatures, much like the Chinese Evergreen.
