Betta Fish With Swollen Eye

Betta fish are majestic and graceful when healthy as they glide around their fish bowl. They seem to be an entirely different fish when they are sick, such as in instances when they have a swollen eye.

    • According to Betta Talk (BT), large or swollen eyes on a betta are usually a symptom of "popeye". Popeye is a typically curable infection which is usually caused by dirty or unclean water conditions. BT says that if the water is kept clean and changed on a regular basis, bettas will very seldom contract popeye.

    Treatment

    • Siam's Bettas recommends using neomycin sulphate, which is a common antibiotic available at many pet stores to treat many types of fish bacteria. Also, improve the water conditions by giving the tank a thorough cleaning and check that the air pump is not sucking in water on the suction side of the hose.

    Lifespan

    • According to Better Bettas, the lifespan of a beta is typically three years; they can live to a maximum of five years if extra care is taken. Tips to increase the lifespan of your betta include purchasing from a reputable retailer, having adequate room for the fish to swim, feeding them quality food, and using the minimum amounts of salts and chemicals required.
