How to Heat a Betta Fish Tank

Bettas are tropical fish that thrive in a constant temperature of 78 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. A betta can live to be five years or older, yet many die early because they are put in small, unheated bowls. It is still possible to keep your small betta tank or bowl warm enough, without using a large tank and heater.

Instructions

    • 1

Monitor the temperature in your betta's environment. It should not fluctuate much between 78 and 80 degrees Farenheit (25.5 to 26.6 degrees Celsius.)

Use a flat heater for a bowl that is 1 to 2 gallons in size. These heaters are inexpensive and available at pet stores. They will raise the temperature of the water about 5 degrees, depending on the size of the tank or bowl. However, they are not adjustable and don't shut off if the water gets too warm, so you must monitor this type. Unless you have an aerator to keep the water moving, they won't heat the bowl consistently. If some areas of the bowl are cool, you will notice your betta staying right next to the heater.

Use an adjustable regular tank heater if your tank holds 5 gallons or more.

    • 4

Warm the water you use for changes to the same temperature as the water in the tank.
