How to Add a Peace Plant to a Betta Tank

Betta fish, also known as Siamese fighting fish, are low-maintenance fish known for their aggressive behavior, presence of primitive lungs and iridescent coloring in males. Pet owners should keep each betta in its own separate tank, since the pugnacious fish may puff out their gills and collide with other fish, causing injury. To add visual interest to a betta environment without adding other live animals, many owners plant a peace lily in the tank.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a healthy peace lily plant from a pet supply store. Only purchase one or two plants for each gallon of water in your tank. Peace lilies should have healthy roots and leaves. If the plant has brown leaves or roots, do not purchase it; diseased plants may harm your fish.

    • 2

Plant the peace lily in the gravel at the bottom of the betta tank so the plant's crown lies above the gravel.

    • 3

Trim away any brown leaves and roots as early as possible to prevent tank contamination.

    • 4

Rinse the peace lily plant with dechlorinated water whenever you change the water in the tank.
