How to Prepare Well Water for a Betta Aquarium

Betta fish originated in the warm waters of countries including Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia, and in order for them to survive in your home, their water must be kept at room temperature for them to thrive. Using water from a well is not an issue as long as the water is properly treated.

Instructions

Fill the fish tank with fresh well water. Let the water sit for twenty-four hours uncovered.

    • 2

Use the pH test kit to test the water's pH. The pH should be between 6.5 and 7.5. Lower the pH by adding a piece of wood. Raise it by putting a sea shell in the water. Let the water sit overnight again if you are making an adjustment.

Use the water conditioner. While most well water will not contain chlorine, it may have heavy minerals that can be harmful to any fish. Follow the directions for the brand and type that you bought.

Check the temperature using the thermometer. After sitting out the water for 24 hours, it should be room temperature and ready for the betta.
