How to Decorate Fighting Fish in a Vase

Siamese Fighting Fish, also known as bettas, are among the most popular fish for first-time hobbyists. These fish are able to breathe air as well as take in oxygen from the water, and that reduces the need for outside filtration and aeration. In addition, the small size of a betta, and the fact that these fish must be housed alone, makes it possible to create an attractive display with little more than a fish, a vase and some decorations.

Choose a gravel color that complements the color of your fighting fish. Black gravel makes a wonderful contrast to a pale yellow or red fighting fish, while a white or sand-colored gravel is a good choice for blue and green varieties of fighting fish.

    • 2

Place a layer of gravel on the bottom of the vase and use it to anchor either a live or artificial plant. A single large plant is sufficient for a vase containing a fighting fish. Choosing a live plant gives your betta an extra source of nutrients and also adds oxygen to the water.

Add an assortment of aquarium decorations to your fighting fish vase. Look for decorations designed for small tanks, since you have limited space to work with.

Place a small filter designed for fish bowls inside the vase if you want additional filtration. Bettas do not require additional filtration as long as the water is changed regularly, but adding a filter can keep the water cleaner and let you stretch the time between water changes. Try hiding the filter behind the plant or disguising it with one of the other decorations.
