When did fishnet tights become popular?

The first fishnet stockings appeared during the Renaissance in Italy. They were primarily worn by upper class women and courtesans. Queen Elizabeth I of England was known for wearing fishnet stockings under her gowns. In the 18th and 19th centuries, fishnet tights were part of the lingerie of most well-off women. It wasn't until the 1960s that fishnet tights began to be worn as outerwear due to the rise of the punk and gothic subcultures. It was at this time that fishnet tights became popular among rebellious and avant-garde individuals.
