Why Brian thought of catching fish earlier?

Brian did not think of catching fish earlier because he was not aware that there were fish in the lake near him. He had been surviving on berries, nuts, and rabbits. It was only after he saw the fish jumping out of the water that he realized that he could catch them for food.
