* Fish: This makes up the bulk of their diet. They primarily eat bony fish like rays, skates, and other sharks.
* Cephalopods: These include squid, octopus, and cuttlefish, which they find in deeper waters.
* Crustaceans: Crabs, lobsters, and shrimp can also be part of their diet.
* Other invertebrates: They'll sometimes eat worms and jellyfish.
* Seabirds: Hammerheads have been known to snatch birds resting on the water's surface.
* Small mammals: They've also been known to eat small mammals, especially in coastal areas.
Their distinctive hammer-shaped head helps them locate prey, as it provides a wider field of vision and allows them to detect electrical signals emitted by fish.
Interestingly, some species of hammerheads have been observed to use their heads to "stun" prey before eating it. They'll smack their head against the bottom, creating a wave that disorients fish and makes them easier to catch.
