How to Feed Fish Spirulina

Spirulina algae is known for its positive probiotic health effects in animals, humans and fish alike. In nature, spirulina exists only in volcanic lakes where the water is warm and the alkaline levels are high. The algae has a blue-green color and results in healthier fish with a higher resistance to infection and illness. Despite its use as the sole means of sustenance by some animals and fish in the wild, experts recommend a mixed diet of spirulina and fish flakes or brine shrimp.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit your local pet store or search the internet for spirulina fish food. Either search should locate a selection of spirulina-only supplements and spriulina-fortified blended fish foods. If you have a good supply of fish food already and wish to supplement with spirulina, purchase the former. If you are in need of fish food or would like to have a ready-made blend all your fish will require, purchase the latter.

    • 2

Create the proper mixture of spirulina and fish food by adding 1 part spirulina to 4 parts fish food. This is the blend most commonly found in ready-made spirulina fortified fish foods, and the levels recommended by aquarium experts.

    • 3

Distribute the spirulina-fortified blend over the top the tank water as you would normally. Fish should be given small feedings once or twice per day based on your preference and the observed dietary requirements of the fish.

    • 4

Observe your fish for changes in size, activity, color and overall health. Spirulina should positively affect your fish relatively quickly.
