How to Feed Freshwater Perch Fish

The perch has long been a favorite recreational and sporting fish. The freshwater white and yellow varieties are perhaps the two best-known of the species in America. Both are known for their delectable taste and make excellent menu items. While freshwater perch aren't as commonly farmed as some American fish, some people keep perch in large aquariums or ponds. Giving your captive perch the right kind and amount of food is crucial to their well-being.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the age of the fish you are feeding. Baby fish, known as fry, require a different diet than full-grown fish.

    • 2

Collect your chosen food (shrimp, worms, minnows, small insects) and distribute it evenly on the surface of the water. If you know the number of fish you are feeding, plan on three to five food items for each fish. For fry, choose a flake fish food and distribute it evenly on the water's surface.

    • 3

Wait for the food to sink to the bottom. Most perch live along the bottom of ponds and lakes, so food that sinks is preferable. If the perch are in an aquarium, observe the amount of food that reaches the bottom and is eaten.

Repeat feedings at least twice a day for captive fish. For captive fry, it is best to have a constant supply of food. Fry food and feeders are available at many fish shops.
