How to Feed Fathead Minnows

Fathead minnows are increasingly being seen as pond and aquarium fish, as opposed to being used primarily as feeders in the past. While they have a diverse diet in the wild, captive diets can be simple. In a pond, fatheads may not need any commercial food as they feed on mosquito larva, algae and plant material and many other naturally occurring food options. In an aquarium, an algae wafer and commercial pellets are an accepted food source.

Instructions

    • 1

Place an algae wafer in the tank. Many fatheads are eager to eat these over commercial pellets and other foods.

    • 2

Add the selected food source and gradually increase the amount within a two- to three-minute time frame. As with many species of fish, give only the amount of food they can eat in this time frame at each feeding.

    • 3

Feed your fatheads two to three times per day. Three times is preferred if you are planning on breeding them.
