Instructions
Start with a pre-printed calendar. There is no need to make a feeding chart from scratch because the main part will be dates. Use a calendar that has enough room to write two or three lines of notes for each day. The most common types used for feeding charts are wall calendars that can be hung near the guppy tank or calendar books that can be left by the tank.
Write down the type of food you will be feeding the guppies and the amount on each particular day. Although a flake diet might be the basis, you can add in other items, such as greens, worms or mosquito larvae. Decide which days you will be supplementing the basic diet, and mark this down on the relevant days. Greens such as peas and flaked algae can be given several times a week. High-fat items like shrimp or worms should be limited to no more than once per week.
Make a check-mark on the relevant day on your calendar chart after you feed the guppies each day. If you varied from the pre-determined instructions, make a note of this and write down the reason. For example, if the guppies are gaining too much weight, make a note on the days that you reduce their food or don't give them a pre-planned supplement.
Note if you add in a type of food that is not on the chart, marking it on the relevant date. For example, you might have leftover peas or ham in your refrigerator that you decide to give as a treat spontaneously. Note this on the chart, including the amount given. When you offer a new treat, you can also make a note of whether or not the guppies like it. This will help you identify new favorite foods.
Work a weekly fast onto your feeding chart, choosing the same day each week. According to Guppy Place, it is healthy for guppies to fast for one day each week, and this also helps to keep the water cleaner. If your guppies are overweight, this can also reduce the problem.
Notice if the guppies seem to be gaining too much weigh, even with a weekly fast. Go back over the chart and adjust the food amounts. Young guppies need more food than mature ones. If you are starting off with young fish, adjust how much you feed them as they get older. The main sign of overfeeding is development of a pot belly and bulging chest.
How to Make a Feeding Chart for Guppies
If you're going away on vacation and need to give instructions to a pet sitter, or if you simply want to make sure that you're feeding your guppies regularly and correctly, a guppy feeding chart can help. It will confirm that you have fed your guppies every day and keep track of the exact type and amount of food. It will also instantly provide information for anyone who may be helping with their care.
