Gather the ingredients. Buying the food is very simple and you can get it anywhere that sells bait or seafood. Purchase a package of any type of bait that can be fed to fish that eats meat. Some good choices are squid, bait fish, crab and shrimp. If your local store has a seafood counter, sometimes you can ask for scrap seafood that is to be thrown away. It will depend on the individual store and their regulations. If they will not give you scrap seafood, simply purchase a small amount of food or purchase bait packets out of the bait and tackle area if your store has one.

Make sure you have ice cube trays. The frozen food you purchase from a pet store comes in little cubes, which you can recreate by purchasing ice cube trays that let you make small cubes of ice. Even regular ice cube trays are acceptable to use, you’ll just have bigger cubes of food.

Chop up your food. Run your food through a food chopper, food processor or cut into small pieces by hand.

    • 4

Place the food into each ice cube tray, filling it about ¼ deep and then fill to the top with water. Simply place the cubes of food into the freezer and remove them when frozen.

Remove the cubes and place them into an airtight container. Once you are ready to feed the fish, take out a cube and drop it into your aquarium. Your fish will love the fresh food once the ice melts and doing it at home allows you to give your fish all of the nutrients and vitamins instead of serving watered down food.
