How to Feed Frozen Shrimp to Fish

Frozen brine shrimp can serve as a vital dietary component for fresh and saltwater pet fish. The betta breed, as well as other carnivorous and omnivorous aquatic pets, requires regular consumption of protein and fatty acids. Check that the brine shrimp is packaged specifically for pet fish, and carefully read all manufacturer instructions to ensure it is breed-appropriate. Ensure the pet fish is receiving appropriate serving sizes to prevent the shrimp from decaying in the tank and problems associated with overeating.

Ensure the brine shrimp is completely frozen at the time of purchase. Allowing the package of shrimp to defrost before refreezing can compromise the safety of the pet food. Check with a pet store personnel to ensure the temperature of the shrimp is maintained at a constant level during transport.

Place a single frozen cube of the brine shrimp into a sealed plastic bag. Wrap the bag in a cloth towel to protect the content, and then hit the bag with a hammer, breaking the cube into chunks approximately 1/10th inch in size. Place the bag in the freezer, and only briefly remove before feedings.

Provide the pet fish with a small serving size of frozen brine shrimp twice daily. Carefully check manufacturer instructions for specific serving sizes. Avoid offering them an amount larger than the size of their eye to avoid causing harm to the fish. Place the crushed pieces of shrimp directly into the tank while still frozen.
