How to Raise and Feed Minnows in a Pond

Raising minnows in a pond is a fairly low-key affair. The minnow, largely herbivorous, feeds on a wide variety of plant and animal life, such as algae and insects. Once the fish are in place, you only have to top up their food intake, because they grow quickly, and encourage them to spawn. Make sure your pond is well-oxygenated: a good indicator is the presence of other fish. A large, deep pond is best for raising minnows and ensuring their survival.

Instructions

Buy an aerator if you do not think that your pond has enough oxygen. If other fish are living happily in your pond there should be enough oxygen in it. It would also help to install a small, continuously running waterfall.

    • 2

Place some objects, such as a cup, rocks and gravel or shingle in the pond to help the minnows in their spawning process. Alternatively, consider acquiring a breeding cave to encourage spawning.

Feed the minnows on general fish food: a few flakes is probably enough twice or three times a day. Most ponds, with their algae and plankton, probably contain enough "food" for the average minnows, but in case your pond is light on vegetation, use the fish food.
