How to Feed a Pleco Potto

Plecostomus Hypostomus, or plecos pottos, are a species of catfish originally found in the Amazon River. These fish latch on to hard surfaces due to suction generated from their mouths. The widespread existence of these fish in aquariums today can be attributed to their inherent nature as scavengers. Since these fish eat virtually anything, plecos keep fish tanks clean by consuming algae and food scraps left uneaten by other fish. To ensure the health and longevity of plecos in your tank, you should enhance their diet.

Instructions

    • 1

      Feed the pleco at night.

    • 2

Provide the pleco with one algae wafer nightly. Give an extra wafer to plecos that exceed the average size range of 4 to 12 inches.

    • 3

Avoid feeding the pleco flake food until the fish demonstrates the ability to swim quickly to the top of the tank, if the pleco shares an aquarium with other fish. This is necessary because flakes float at the surface and faster fish may eat them before the pleco has a chance to reach it.

    • 4

Attach cucumber, zucchini, squash or lettuce to an aquarium vegetable holder and give it to the pleco once or twice a week as a supplement to the algae wafer.
