The swordfish is found in oceans around the world including the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic oceans. The species is found in tropical temperate waters, but may occasionally be found in cold waters. The swordfish is also called the broadbill in English and is known by a variety of other names in different languages. The swordfish is characterized by a long broad, sword-like bill. The species can reach a maximum length of 455 centimeters and maximum weight of 650 kilograms. The average lifespan of the sword fish is approximately nine or more years.

The omega-3 fatty acids are believed to help prevent various illnesses in humans including heart disease, heart attacks, clogged arteries, high blood pressure and rheumatoid arthritis. Dr. Donald Hensrud, chairman of the Division of Preventive Medicine at the Mayo Clinic, shared his views on the benefits of omega 3 from fish and a healthy heart. Fatty fish like the swordfish have omega-3 fatty acids that can enhance the immune system, decrease triglycerides and improve the cognitive function in growing children.

    Selenium

    • Swordfish contain micro-nutrients like selenium, an important antioxidant that plays a role in fighting caner and heart ailments. It serves as an essential mineral in maintaining the thyroid gland function. Selenium has a high binding affinity with mercury; when the two elements meet, they bind together and the selenium prevents the body from absorbing the mercury. Some experts believe that selenium helps to neutralize the mercury found in seafood and in other dietary sources.

    • Fish are believed to be a good source of vitamins that help maintain strong teeth, bones, healthy nerve tissues and a healthy complexion. Swordfish contain B vitamins like vitamin B6, essential in the making of hemoglobin. This vitamin helps to increase the amount of oxygen carried by the blood, preventing anemia. B vitamins are also useful in converting food to energy. The swordfish is an oil-rich fish, a useful source of fat soluble vitamins A and D, both necessary for healthy bones.

    • Swordfish contain a variety of minerals including calcium, zinc, phosphorous, iron, fluoride and iodine. Calcium is beneficial in initiating the process of the DNA synthesis and for maintaining strong teeth and bones.
