How to Feed Seahorses

Some people fill their fish tanks with common types of fish, such as goldfish, tetras and cichlids. However, others choose more exotic types of sea life, such as seahorses. These small creatures have the head of a horse with a curly tail and fins. Because they are different from typical fish-tank fish, they require a different regimen of care, including the way in which they are fed and the type of food that they eat.

Instructions

    • 1

Raise brine shrimp in a separate container. Purchase a brine shrimp kit that contains everything you need. Place the shrimp eggs into salt water at room temperature. They should hatch within a day or two. Feed them a few small yeast flakes a day until you are ready to feed them to the seahorses.

    • 2

Add the brine shrimp into the tank as soon as possible after birth. The older the brine shrimp get, the less nutritional value they have. Seahorses prefer live food.

    • 3

Purchase other live seahorse foods at your local pet store, if it is available. Check with your local pet store to find out if they carry the creatures you need. Seahorses also eat various other types of small shrimp, small crustaceans and tiny fish.

    • 4

Feed the seahorses frozen alternatives if live food is not available. While seahorses obtained from the wild will not eat dead creatures, those raised in captivity adapt well to frozen food. If you cannot find this food in your local pet store, you can order it online.

    • 5

Offer a variety of foods to your seahorses. They require different foods to meet their nutritional needs.

    • 6

Enrich the frozen food to help your seahorses get the nutrients they need. For small frozen foods, soak the food in the enrichment product overnight. Drain and rinse the food and add it to the fish tank. For larger frozen foods, inject the enrichment product directly into the food using a small syringe.
