How to Feed Lizards to a Jardini

A jardini is a variety of arowana fish that is found in the waters of Northern Australia and New Guinea. These fish can grow up to 30 inches long when kept in captivity, and are popular amongst those who enjoy exotic fish. Unlike other aquarium fish, these fish have man-sized appetites. Jardini fish are carnivorous and will eat almost any animal small enough to fit into their mouths including lizards.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the top of the aquarium when it is time to feed the jardini. Adult jardini fish over 12 inches long should eat once every two days; fish between 6 to 12 inches should eat once per day.

Drop the lizard into the water. The lizard must be small enough to fit into the jardini's mouth. Lizard varieties like newts or geckos, that are no longer than 6 inches long, can be purchased from the pet store and are small enough for an adult jardini fish. Feed smaller jardinis smaller-sized lizards, like baby newts. Then quickly cover the tank. Jardini are known to leap out of the water in an attempt to catch prey.

Watch to see if the jardini eats the lizard. Remove the lizard with a net if the jardini doesn't show any interest after a few hours. Try to feed the jardini another type of meat such as crickets, grasshoppers, small frogs, smaller fish and shrimp.

Change 20 to 25 percent of the tank water twice a week. When jardini eat lizards and other meat, they produce more waste. It is important to keep the water clean to remove harmful nitrates.
