How much can a yearling eat?
Yearlings (year-old horses) generally require 2-3% of their body weight in forage on a dry matter basis each day. Their diet also includes grain or other supplements to cover specific protein and nutrient requirements needed for proper growth and health. On average, a 1-year-old horse weighing 900 lbs (408 kg) will consume around 18-27 lbs (8-12 kg) of hay or grass per day (dry matter basis) and approximately 3-5 lbs (1.4-2.3 kg) of concentrated feed to meet their average daily nutrient requirements.
