Although gelatinous in appearance, blobfish have large jaws and sharp teeth, which allows them to consume shellfish and other small invertebrates that float by their mouths.

How do blobfish get their food?
The blobfish ( Psychrolutes marcidus) lives at depths of 600 to 1,200 meters or 2,000 to 4,000 feet near Australia and Tasmania. There is extreme pressure from the surrounding water at these depths, therefore the blobfish has very little muscle due to the lack of oxygen. Blobfish float because their density is slightly lower than that of water, which allows them to conserve energy without expending any to swim.
