Why do kissing fish kiss other in the tank?

Kissing fish do not kiss out of affection or pleasure. The behaviour known as "kissing" in kissing fish is actually a territorial behaviour. They press their fleshy lips against each other to establish dominance and defend their territory from other kissing fish. It's a way for them to assert their authority and maintain their social hierarchy within the tank.
