What Does Octopus Eat?

Octopus are predators and scavengers that have a very varied diet, mainly eating crustaceans, mollusks and fish. Here is a list of the some of the main foods it feeds on:

Crabs: Octopus love to eat crabs, often breaking their shells to get to the meat inside.

Mollusks: Octopus enjoy a wide variety of mollusks, such as clams, mussels, snails and squid.

Fish: Octopus are opportunistic feeders and will eat any type of fish they come across, such as small reef fish, flatfish and even sharks.

Echinoderms: Octopus will also eat echinoderms, such as sea urchins, starfish and brittle stars.

Other invertebrates: Octopus may also consume other invertebrates, such as worms, sea cucumbers and lobsters.

Carrion: Octopus are also scavengers and will feed on dead or dying animals, including fish, mollusks and crustaceans.

Plankton: Small octopus and planktonic octopus may feed on plankton and other microscopic organisms.
