What do Greenland Sharks eat?

Greenland sharks have a carnivorous diet and feed primarily on fish, seals, and other sharks. They are opportunistic predators and will consume anything that is readily available. Some of the specific prey items that have been found in the stomachs of Greenland sharks include:

- Cod

- Haddock

- Halibut

- Greenland halibut

- Salmon

- Arctic char

- Sculpins

- Flounders

- Lumpfish

- Seals

- Porpoises

- Basking sharks

- Other Greenland sharks

Because Greenland sharks live in the deep sea for many decades and are slow-moving, it is believed they are not active hunters and rely on scavenging and ambushing their prey. They have poor eyesight but rely on their highly developed sense of smell to locate food sources. Additionally, it has been observed that they can enter a state of dormancy when food is scarce, allowing them to survive for long periods without eating.
