How to Mate Angelfish

With its flashy colors and beautiful fins, an angelfish is a complementary pet to any aquarium. If you are looking to breed angelfish, you must first get them to mate. If you are starting with juvenile angelfish, the process can take a year before seeing results. Whether you are breeding as a hobby or for business, knowing the behaviors and mating patterns of angelfish is essential.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify the sex of the angelfish before mating occurs. Males grow larger in size during maturity faster than female angelfish. Males also have a rounder crown, the area above the head, as compared to females who have a sharper crown.

    • 2

Place a group of young male and female angelfish in a 10 gallon spawning tank. This will give them a chance to identify with each other and pair up. It will also give you better success for at least one pair to mate. It will take one year for the angelfish to reach maturity. Once they reach maturity, they will pair up.

    • 3

Observe their behavior in breeding form. If a pair of angelfish begins to defend its territory and chase the other angelfish away from the area, it is likely the pair has decided to mate.

    • 4

Move the other fish away from the breeding pair. Instead of relocating the breeding pair away from an environment it has become familiar with, it is a better option to relocate the other angelfish.
