Things You'll Need
- 20 gallon aquarium
- Thermometer
- Water testing kit
- Filtration system
- Various zebra danio food
Instructions
Keep the zebra danios in a school, or group, of fish. This will make them feel comfortable and cause them to be less stressed. In addition, the more fish you have in a school, the less aggressive they will be. The school should ideally have between three and ten fish in it. Other types of fish can also live with zebra danios, although aquarium mates should be non-aggressive. Since zebra danios can be quick and spirited, don't place them with other fish that need a calm or quiet environment. The danios' fast movements will stress these fish.
Provide a 20 gallon or larger aquarium for the zebra danios. You can add some plants or decorations, but the majority of the space in the aquarium should be open so that the danios can swim freely. Place a secure cover, such as an aquarium hood, over the aquarium. Zebra danios will sometimes attempt to jump from the aquarium, and this cover will prevent that.
Place a thermometer in the aquarium. The water temperature in the aquarium should remain between 64 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Although zebra danios can stand cold or warm temperatures, the best temperature for the fish is somewhere right in the middle of that range.
Test the pH level of the water with a water testing kit. Although zebra danios are flexible when it comes to water, they do best in an aquarium with a pH between 6.5 and 8. Use water additives to adjust the pH if necessary.
Install a filtration system with a moderate water flow in the aquarium. Zebra danios are naturally found in streams and enjoy the movement of the water.
Feed the zebra danios a prepared fish food. Zebra danios are omnivorous and will therefore eat nearly any fish food. Follow the instructions on the fish food in order to feed them. Supplement the zebra danios' diet with fresh or frozen foods, such as brine shrimp and bloodworms.
