Common Fish for an Aquarium

For aquarium beginners, it may be best to start out with sociable schooling fish species and work up to more challenging high-maintenance fish. Before purchasing fish, be sure to decide what kind of tank you will be using in order to make the most practical fish species selection.
  1. Danio

    • Danios are freshwater schooling fish. There are several popular varieties, including the Giant Danio, Leopard Danio, Pearl Danio and the striped Zebra Danio. They have a lot of energy and are quite inexpensive. They are usually less than 2 1/2 inches long, except for the Giant Danio, which can be as long as 4 inches.

    Rasbora

    • There are many varieties of Rasboras and most make excellent choices for freshwater aquariums. Rasbora are also schooling fish and are very social and easy to maintain. Popular types include the Harlequin Rasbora, Clown Rasbora and Scissortail Rasbora. This species usually grows to no more than two inches in length.

    White Cloud

    • White Cloud Mountain Minnows are very small freshwater fish. They grow no more than 1 1/2 inches in length but have beautiful coloration with a bold white stripe down the length of their body. They are very social and active and also travel in schools. White Clouds are very easy to maintain and feed.

    Rainbowfish

    • Rainbowfish are freshwater aquarium fish that should be kept in groups of six or more. The fish are easy to care for and are also quite attractive, with iridescent, colorful scales. Rainbowfish can grow up to six inches in length, although some are only a few inches long. Popular types include the Australian Rainbow, Boesman's Rainbow, Celebes Rainbow and Turquoise Rainbow.

    Bangai Cardinal

    • With its bold black and white stripes and unique fin formation, the Bangai Cardinal is a popular choice for saltwater aquariums. They require consistent feedings but do not require any other maintenance. The mating process is also fascinating; Bangai Cardinal males carry the developing babies in their mouth for a month before releasing them. The fish are generally around three inches in length and are quite peaceful.

    • The clownfish is a colorful orange and white striped saltwater fish. They are very hardy and do well in most saltwater aquarium settings. Clownfish are usually around three inches in length. The clownfish is also known as the anemonefish.

    Pufferfish

    • Pufferfish are well-known for their tendency to inflate themselves when threatened. There are many varieties, including balloonfish, blowfish, toadfish and bubblefish. They vary in size, although most aquarium varieties are between three and five inches. Pufferfish thrive in larger aquariums with a diverse array of food, including shrimp and clams. Some types can be aggressive or territorial.
