Consider your pet's personality. Most bettas are territorial and aggressive. Names depicting famous warriors are common. Check some history books for war heroes, or dig into a little Greek Mythology. Look up famous wrestlers and martial artists. Even movie heroes can make great fish names. ("What's the name of that fish that just dove under the bridge?" "His name is Ah-nold. He'll be right bock.")
Look at your betta's physical appearance. The brightly colored male bettas have long, flowing fins. You could go with the standard "Red" for instance, or you could have some fun with the fact that they look more girlie than masculine. Try "RuPaul" or "Diva" on for size.
Think about names that are traditional for other types of pets. Spot, Fido or Fluffy are all cute on a betta--more so than on a cat or dog. Some people name the cat "Fish" and the fish "Cat" just so they could say to the kids, "Go feed the Cat-Fish" and watch them roll their eyes.
Read name lists. Borrow baby name books from the library, or search "pet names" online for thousands of name choices. When you find a definite maybe, read it aloud several times while looking at your betta. It will either fit well or not at all. If your betta sticks his tongue out and blows little betta raspberries at the sound of it, move on.
Try a name generator. The Internet has hundreds of them. You can get some rather odd combinations, ("Snorkie Bunny-Pie" isn't for everyone), but you may just get lucky. You won't know until you try.
