Facts on Neon Swordtails

Neon swordtails, or Xiphophorus helleri, are a common aquarium fish. Swordtails come in many colors besides the neon coloration found in the bands around the fish. They have a peaceful disposition that is suitable for a community aquarium. Pet owners find that swordtails are easy to care for and provide entertainment with their active swimming.
  1. Description/Size

    • Farm raised in the United States, a neon swordtail measures 1 1/2 to 2 inches upon purchase, and they grow up to 4 1/2 inches. The male swordtail is easily identified by the extension from the lower part of his tail that resembles a sword and provides the basis for the common name.

    Aquarium Requirements

    • Purchase an aquarium with a minimum of 20 gallons. Make sure it has plenty of plants, medium lighting and a nice swimming space. A cover is a requirement as the neon swordtail is a jumper. Limit the male neon swordtail population to one per tank as the males become aggressive with each other. Keep the water temperature between 64 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit.

    Diet

    • Neon swordtails are omnivores and prefer a diet of commercially prepared flake foods and algae. Other foods to feed the neon swordtail, according to the website liveaquaria.com, include freeze-dried bloodworms, tubifex and brine shrimp.

    Breeding

    • A female neon swordtail can produce numerous babies at one time, known as fry. The females also have the ability to retain sperm from a single mating and continue to produce more fry, a trait known as superfetation. This process can continue for months with more fry continually being produced, according to an article on the Durham Region Aquarium Society website. Be aware that one female can be quite prolific.
