Why do fish die so early when you get them?

Fish may die shortly after being introduced into a new aquarium for several reasons:

Water Quality: Fish are very sensitive to water quality fluctuations, and introducing them into a new environment with different water parameters can cause stress, leading to illness and death. Factors like pH, temperature, chlorine, and ammonia levels must match those of their original habitat.

Acclimation Process: Improper acclimation when moving fish to a new environment can cause fish to go into shock and die. Acclimation involves gradually introducing new water parameters over time to allow the fish to adjust. Failing to acclimate fish properly can lead to stress and death.

Insufficient Oxygen: Ensure the new aquarium has adequate aeration to provide sufficient dissolved oxygen for the fish. Overcrowding or lack of proper water circulation can lead to oxygen depletion and cause fish to suffocate.

Disease and Parasites: Fish can carry diseases or parasites that may not be immediately visible. When introducing new fish into an existing tank, quarantine the new arrivals to prevent the spread of any infections or illnesses to the existing fish.

Predators: If you introduce small or delicate fish into a tank with larger, aggressive species, they may become victims of predation. Ensure the fish are compatible and have an appropriate environment for their needs.

Unsuitable Habitat: The new environment might not provide suitable living conditions for the fish. Make sure the tank has appropriate lighting, filtration, hiding spots, and the required water parameters for the specific fish species.

Stress: The entire process of moving and introducing fish into a new environment can cause stress. Stress can weaken the fish's immune system and make them more susceptible to diseases and infections.

It is important to research the specific requirements of your fish species and create an environment that meets their needs. Proper care, acclimation, and monitoring of water parameters are essential to ensuring the survival and well-being of new fish in an aquarium.
