How to Change the Media in a Cascade 1000 Aquarium Filter

The Cascade canister aquarium filter provides you with three separate trays for filtering media. You can use any type of filtering material like bio-balls, filter floss and filter pads. You can use charcoal filters or any other filter media you like. However, to install the filtering media, you need to get the lid off so you can remove the trays.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the shut-off valves on the intake port and the outtake port. Turn each valve clockwise to turn them off. This stops the flow of water into the filter housing. Turn the filter off by unplugging it from the electrical outlet.

    • 2

Locate the three large black locks. The filter has a lock on each side and one on the front. Lift up each lock to unlock the filter lid. The locks stay connected to the filter lid when unlocked.

    • 3

Pull the lid off the filter canister and then pull the top basket, middle basket and the bottom basket out of the canister.

    • 4

Discard the old filter media from the baskets and clean the baskets in warm water.

    • 5

Fill each basket up with different filter media and then place each basket into the canister.

    • 6

Place the lid onto the canister and push down all three black locks.

    • 7

Open the shut-off valve on the intake, plug the filter in and then allow the canister time to fill up. Turn on the shut-off valve on the outtake port to start filtering your tank.
