The Advantages of Live Plants in Aquariums

Maintaining water quality is vital to keeping aquarium fish alive and healthy. Many people believe that live plants help maintain water quality. This is not necessarily the case due to advancements in aquarium filtration systems. Even though artificial plants will not harm aquarium water, it is not always best for the fish.
  1. Toxins

    • Live plants are natural filters.

Live plants absorb chemicals that are harmful to fish, such as carbon dioxide and nitrates. Not only do plants absorb chemicals, they provide a natural place for beneficial bacteria to cling to and they add oxygen to the water. When live plants are used, there is no need for a noisy filtration system. A small, quieter, backup filter system will do just fine.

    Algae

    • Plants and algae compete for nutrients, and healthy live plants win the battle every time, helping to reduce algae growth. When algae are under control, there are enough nutrients for the fish as well as the plants.

    Natural Environment

    • Live plants provide security for fish.

Live plants provide a more natural environment for fish. In their natural environment, it's common for fish to hide in plants. Without this protection, fish can easily become stressed, making them more susceptible to disease. Live plants are soft and flexible, making them less likely to injure the fish.

    Food

    • Many fish are omnivorous and need to eat plant material to maintain good health. Live plants also offer a food alternative to regular fish food, which is especially beneficial when you're away for a few days.
