String lights are a good option.

Determine the type of lights to use. String lights used at Christmas or rope lights will work well for this project. They should be indoor/outdoor lights for waterproof reasons, and use little energy (low wattage).

    • 2
      Hot glue gun for waterproofing

Apply glue with a hot glue gun to any connections. Apply liberally, and make sure there are no gaps between connections. This will assure the lights are waterproof.

    • 3

Test lights to assure they work properly, and to get a feel for how much light they produce.

      Fish lit from above

Attach lights to the lid of the aquarium, or the upper portion of the side walls above the water line. This also can be done with a hot glue gun, or with waterproof tape, such as electrical tape.
