How to Check the pH in Water

Fish ponds and aquariums need constant monitoring of the water quality, including the pH. The pH of the water refers to how acidic (low pH) or alkaline (high pH) the water is. Some fish are quite tolerant of various pH levels, while others may die if the pH is not in the correct range for the species. A basic test kit to have on hand for any fish owners is a pH test kit.

Instructions

Use a pH strip test kit. These kits are inexpensive and may be found at any fish store or online fish supply retailer.

    • 2

Hold the test strip at the end without the test pad. Do not touch the square test pad--doing so will affect the results.

    • 3

Swirl the other end of the test strip in the water for the amount of time given in the test kit instructions. Usually you only need to keep the test strip in the water for a few seconds.

    • 4

Read the test results in bright light. After waiting the instructed time after removing the test strip from the water, usually about 30 seconds, compare the square test pad color to the color chart on the bottle. By matching the color on the test strip to the chart, you will find out the pH level of the water.

Test the water after water changes and on a weekly basis. This gives you a good idea of chemical changes occurring the tank so that you can make adjustments to the water chemistry as needed.
