How to Prepare a Peace Plant for a Betta Fish

A peace plant, also known as a peace lily or spathiphyllum floribundum, requires very little care, light and humidity. Despite its low-maintenance qualities, the peace plant is a consistent bloomer that produces large, white flowers that extend from long green shoots that complement shiny, lance-shaped leaves. This water-loving plant is well suited for growth in soil or water, which makes it the perfect decorative accent for a betta fish bowl.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin the preparations by choosing a slim glass vase for the peace plant. The vase should be tall enough to support the root system of the peace plant that you choose, yet thin enough to fit in the direct center of your betta's fish bowl. Approximately 1 inch of open space should exist between the vase and the rim of the fish bowl, all the way around.

    • 2

Remove the peace plant from its pot and take it to the kitchen sink. Turn on the tap and run the roots under a gentle stream of lukewarm water. Remove as much soil from the roots as possible.

    • 3

Fill the glass vase to its halfway point with decorative pebbles. Place the peace plant in the center of the glass vase, resting its roots on the decorative pebbles.

    • 4

Set the glass vase in the center of the fish bowl. Continue filling the glass vase with the decorative pebbles, leaving 1-inch of empty space at the top of its rim. The weight of the pebbles will hold the vase in place inside the fish bowl.

    • 5

Fill the fish bowl with lukewarm water, leaving 2 to 3 inches of space between the water line and the rim of the bowl. Add some lukewarm water to the vase, making sure that the water level is high enough to cover the roots. Add your Betta fish to his new bowl.
