How to Grow Hairgrass

Hairgrass, also known as Eleocharis acicularis, is a water plant that grows either partially or completely submerged in fresh water. Hairgrass is a popular aquarium and pond garden green because of its thin, bright green flowing blades and ability to spread into a carpet on the floor of an aquarium, tub or pond. It also makes a good habitat for spawning fish. Propagate hairgrass by dividing the root clump and replanting it, as hairgrass cannot be grown from cuttings.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a pot containing hair grass down on the floor of an aquarium, or the bottom of a pond. The pot will act as an anchor for the hairgrass; in time, it will grow over the pot and carpet the floor.

    • 2

Seat a clump of hairgrass into soil with your hands, or long, sterilized tweezers or tongs.

    • 3

Anchor the clump of hairgrass with stones or a log until its roots knit the grass to its surroundings.

    • 4

Speed up the carpeting-over effect. Divide a clump of hairgrass into smaller portions with about four or five blades or leaves each. Plant the portions 1 1/2 inches apart on the pond or aquarium floor, again anchoring with a stone or pebbles.
