How to Get Rid of Floating Particles in Aquariums

Fish aquariums are the perfect alternative for pet lovers who cannot own dogs or cats due to rent or lease agreements. Aquariums are typically low maintenance, but some upkeep is required to maintain a healthy habitat for pet fish. In addition to regular partial water changes, remove floating particles and debris like old food and fish feces from the aquarium. The most effective way to remove floating debris is to use siphon tubes that are especially made for cleaning debris from fish tanks.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the tank cover and light and set them aside.

    • 2

Place a bucket on the floor in front of the aquarium.

    • 3

Set the large, plastic end of the siphon tube into the aquarium and then completely submerge the small end of the rubber tubing below the water too.

    • 4

Place a thumb or finger over the small end of the siphon tube and remove it from the aquarium. Set that end of the hose into the bucket and release thumb or finger from the end of the tube. The water should begin siphoning out into the bucket.

    • 5

Work the large end of the siphon tube along the bottom of the rocks, gravel or sand at the bottom of the tank. Allow the sucking action to suck out the floating particles and particles that have sunk to the bottom of the tank.

    • 6

Remove the siphon tube from the water once the bucket is full. Use a scoop net to catch any lingering floating particles.

    • 7

Dump the old water out and then fill the bucket with fresh water. Add a tap water purifier to the fresh water in the bucket. Follow the instructions on the tap water purifier, as brands do differ. Approximately 8 drops of tap water purifier per every gallon of water is typically added. Pour the treated water into the aquarium.

    • 8

Replace the tank cover and the light.
