How to Make Fake Plants for a Fish Tank

Plants are often used in fish tanks to provide fish with a place to hide and to create a more attractive environment. If you don't have a green thumb you may not be comfortable with caring for real plants. However, as an alternative you can make fake ones, which offer the same benefits of real plants without having to be cared for. You can make simple fern-like plants out of a green trash bag.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a heavy-duty green trash bag on a table.

    • 2
You will begin with an asterisk shape.

Cut a large asterisk shape with a sharp pair of scissors. It should have a central hub with six to 10 6-inch spokes radiating from it.

    • 3

Place a small stone on the central hub.

    • 4

Wrap the plastic around the stone, turning it into a small bag with streamers coming out of the top.

    • 5

Tie the plastic over the stone with a piece of green string.

    • 6

Drop the fake plant into the fish tank. The stone will anchor the bottom, and the plastic spokes will float upward.

    • 7

Make additional plants, varying the length and number of spokes to create variety.
