How to Make an Aquarium for a Betta

The Siamese Fighting Fish, commonly known to many as the betta fish, is an brightly colored tropical fish found in warm water swamps and other areas of slow moving water. With brightly colored shades of blue or red, a single betta fish is an ideal low-maintenance fish to keep in a small home aquarium. Male betta fish, with brighter colors and fins that flow more, are incredibly aggressive and must be housed alone.

Instructions

Purchase a fish tank to house your betta. Many individuals choose to use a small bowl or vase, but prolong the lifespan of your betta by purchasing a tank with a five to ten gallon capacity.

    • 2

Place a filter on the side or in the corner. Avoid using a filter built into the lid since it's harder to regulate water filtration and is too powerful for a betta fish to tolerate.

    • 3

Make your betta fish comfortable by providing plenty of hiding spaces, at least 50 to 75 percent of the tank should offer him somewhere to hide from view. The best choice is to place a few plants along the bottom of the tank. Plants also put oxygen into the water and help keep the water cleaner.

Decorate the tank with gravel, additional artificial plants or small items such as castle houses at the bottom. Only place items specifically designed for aquarium use in the tank to avoid toxic materials that may harm your betta.
