How to Grow Crayfish in Tanks

Crayfish make interesting pets, and with over 150 various species, crayfish come in all sorts of colors and sizes. Looking like a miniature lobster, crayfish are small crustaceans found in fresh waters and pet stores around the world. With proper care, crayfish can be kept in tank or aquariums, and will grow and thrive for an average of two to three years.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare at least a 10-gallon aquarium with an escape proof lid for the crayfish. It will need a filter and aerator.

    • 2

Add a layer of pebbles or sand to the bottom of the tank.

    • 3

Put hiding rocks or caves and plastic plants inside the tank to provide hiding places for the crayfish.

    • 4

Place the crayfish in the aquarium and feed it a pellet-type fish food daily. Supplement the crayfish's diet with frozen vegetables, shrimp and meat.

    • 5

Keep the water temperature between 65 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Install a water heater to keep water from getting too cold, if necessary.

    • 6

Clean the tank often and replace approximately 20 percent of the water volume once a month with fresh water.
