How to Keep Minnows Alive for Resale

Minnow is a term that refers to a variety of small fish, specifically fish that are used among fishermen for fishing bait. Types of minnows include the bluntnose minnow, brassy minnow and the eastern silvery minnow. If you live in an area where fishing has a large following, selling minnows can be a viable way to earn an extra income. In order to keep your minnows alive for resale, you'll need to create the right habitat for the fish. This is accomplished with an aquarium and the proper filtering mechanisms that will supply your minnows with the oxygen they need.

Assemble the aquarium you acquired in a location that has shade and stays cool. For instance, this can be your garage, basement or any other shaded area inside your house, that is if you are keeping the minnows in your home.

Fill the tank with nonchlorinated water. Water with chlorine will kill minnow fish. You can use water from the lake or ocean, or you can run the water through a filter that removes chlorine. You can get these filters online, at grocery stores or at your local home improvement store. Do not change all of the water. Replace only one-fourth to one-third of the tank volume at a time. Keep the tanks covered with fine mesh, as minnows will escape.

Turn on the aquarium filter that came with your aquarium. This filter keeps the water in your tank moving, which provides your fish with the amount of oxygen they need to survive. Minnows can't live in water that isn't being filtered for long periods of time because they will die quickly for lack of oxygen. Therefore, an aquarium is essential if you want the fish to live long enough to resell them.

Put the minnows in the aquarium. Feed the fish goldfish flakes once a day. The amount of flakes you'll need to add depends on the amount of minnows you have in your aquarium.
