How to Use PVC to Build a Reef in an Aquarium

Live rock and coral can create a beautiful reef in your aquarium at home. Make the most of this natural display by creating a stand in your aquarium to elevate certain pieces. PVC pipe is a waterproof material you can use to build this feature. By elevating your reef with a PVC reef table, you will not only better showcase your tank's beauty, but the raised design will also promote water circulation throughout the aquarium.

Instructions

    • 1

Sketch a design of the reef's PVC pipe table to decide its size, shape and how it will be arranged in the tank. Think about what live rock and coral pieces you want to display. Use the tank's actual dimensions when planning the layout. Note the lengths of PVC needed to create your desired design.

    • 2

Cut the needed PVC pieces with a saw. Each reef table will need four vertical legs, two horizontal length pieces and two horizontal width pieces. Also, buy four PVC side outlet 90s corners, which have three sockets at 90-degree angles.

    • 3

Assemble the PVC table by placing the pipes into the corner sockets. Ensure the pipes are secure by tapping them in place with a rubber mallet.

    • 4

Drill holes throughout the structure to allow water flow through the reef stand and prevent waste build-up and anaerobic water. The holes should be about 1 inch apart along the front and back of each pipe. Do not drill holes where they may compromise the structure's integrity, such as in the corners.

    • 5

Measure the top of the PVC table. Cut a plastic egg crate to fit on top of the structure and hold the reef. Attach it with plastic zip ties.

    • 6

Place the PVC table in the aquarium. Arrange the live rock and coral on top of the table.
