How to Raise Peacock Eels

Peacock eels, also called Siamese spiny eels, make excellent aquarium pets. These eels are peaceful and tolerant of tank mates that are of similar size. They are also nocturnal and like to hide. They originate from India, Sri Lanka, Sumatra, Malaysia and Thailand.

Instructions

    • 1

Layer the bottom of the aquarium with sand and fine gravel to mimic the eels' natural habitat.

    • 2

Decorate the tank with plenty of plants including floating ones. Peacock eels prefer to hide. Create cavelike places for them using PVC pipe, decorations and larger rocks.

    • 3

Heat the tank to between 73 and 82 degrees. The pH level of the water needs to be between 6 and 8.

    • 4

Cover the tank as peacock eels are jumpers. They are also curious and may try to poke around in the filter intake, so make sure the end is covered on it.

    • 5

Feed the eel at night with the lights off. The peacock eel's natural diet consists of insect larvae, crustaceans and worms. You can feed them blood worms, brine shrimp and small earth worms raised in organic soil.
